What do models do?
As we hear the word “fashion model” – glamour, camera, fun, and a lot of money comes to our mind. But for a fashion model it is a life of hard work, long hours of work, work outs and diets. Models are people who display, advertise and promote commercial products like fashion clothing, jewelry, cars, etc. People with good looks and fit bodies do well in this field. Career in modeling is also known as the stepping stone to enter the bigger industry of Films and TV. Models work with companies and designers to display products and new trends. They appear on ramps, advertisements in print, TV and websites. Though models have been used in art for centuries, the title of first “fashion model” is usually given to a French woman named Marie Vernet Worth, a shop assistant who worked with the designer Charles Worth in 19th century.
Modeling is one career where more than qualifications one’s physical features and manners matter. Thus there are many short term courses offered by institutes in personal grooming, ramp walking, communication, make up and taking care of one’s health and beauty etc.

The money that one makes depends on the assignment, models rating and on the business who is putting money. In India they are paid for the duration of the contract but for fashion shows they are paid on daily basis. Beginners make less money like Rs.5000-10,000 per show. Established models make a lot of money.
As such career in modelling is only for short duration many people use it as a stepping stone to enter larger industry of films and TV, where they go on to become actor, anchors and presenters apart from endorsing products on screen. Many established models start their own modeling agency and work with new models.
Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Jason Shaw, Naomi Campbell are some international names. Milind Soman, John Abraham, Dinu Morea, Lisa Ray, Gauhar Khan, Arjun Rampal, Bipasha Basu are some of the famous Indian models.
Well typical days depend on the assignment of the day. He/she may report in the studio in the morning and then discuss with the teams regarding the shoot. The models have to change the costume and do makeup and hair setting etc to get the look as per the assignment. Then the camera starts rolling and model usually follow the directions of the ad director or photographer. After a few takes / clicks the shoot is over. They change back and they usually hit the gym to maintain picture perfect bodies.
