An interior designer is an individual who makes the interior of an office space or a residence attractive and more functional. These professionals do this by making changes in the walls, windows, furniture, fixtures and other interiors.

An interior designer has quite a broad spectrum of work. From Individual home planning to make furnishing in industrial buildings, commercial building as well as commercial spaces, Interior Designers would be required to make both residential and workplaces look and feel “aesthetically good”. Designers help in improving lifestyle of people living in same type of property without any innovation for a long-time.

An interior designer has to carry out a lot of tasks which begin with communicating with the client to determine various factors which would affect in planning of interiors. Those factors include architectural preferences, purpose, budget, etc. Then they have to do estimation of cost and material requirement. Interior designers provide advice to clients regarding the layout of the interiors, colour, space planning, and equipment to be used, etc. Selection of particular design happens after taking approval from the client. A good choice of artwork, accessories and furnishing is also one of the responsibilities of an interior designer. They must carry out the work with planning and in a cost effective manner without affecting the quality and with full emphasis on installations, paintings, fabrications, artwork, wall covering, fixture, etc.

Courses & Eligibility


(1.) A student willing to study interior designing can find different courses according to the budget and eligibility. Some of the courses in India along with the eligibility are as under:
(2.) Graduation program in interior design: After passing class XII, the candidate needs to appear for the entrance test.
(3.) Diploma in interior design: This is a program where graduates are preferable.
(4.) Graduate program in interior design (4 years)/ Professional Course in interior design (5 years): XII and stream, Entrance test, CEPT, Ahmadabad School of interior Design and Institute of environmental Design Gujarat.
(5.) Bachelor of Fine arts/ Applied arts with specialization in Interior Design: XII, entrance test, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai
(6.) Degree in architecture (Interior designing special paper): Class XII passed out with entrance test will be the eligibility.
(7.) Post graduation in urban designing: entrance examination.
Other courses are construction and project management, regional planning, housing and environmental planning, etc.

Course Fee


Course fees of interior designing courses vary from one institute to another. Also, an individual pursuing diploma in interior designing will not have the same course fee as those appearing for degree. Thus, the course fee also depends on the type and duration of course. A particular range for interior designing course can be some there between Rs 15,000 – Rs 50,000. Before getting enrolled in an interior designing institution, it is important to check the reputation of the particular institute and the course fees.
VastuKala Academy, College of Architecture and Interior design take a per semester fee of Rs 50,000 for the 1 year part time diploma in interior design.
Sushant School of design takes Rs 2,85,000 per year.
CEPT Ahmedabad Fee for B Interior Design is 1,37,500 per semester

Some of the well-known names in providing excellent knowledge in interior designing are:
(1.) National Institute of design, Ahmedabad.
4 year GDPD in Interior Design and 2 and half year PG Programme in furniture and interior design.
The admission is on the basis of entrance test and there are total 100 seats in B Design at NID Ahmadabad.
(2.) Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, Ahmedabad
Offers 5 year professional programme in Interior Designing ( Eligibility 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics is compulsory) Admission through entrance test conducted by CEPT. There are total 80 seats. 40 for Gujarat students and 40 in All India Quota.
The admissions is on the basis of entrance exam. For selection 70% weightage to Entrance and 30% weightage to 12th marks.
(1.) GGS IP university New Delhi, Offer B Vocational programme in interior design through CET conducted by the university.
(2.) Vastukala Academy, College of Architecture and Interior Design offers 1 year part time Diploma course in Interior Design. The admission is through an interview taken by the institute.
(3.) South Delhi Polytechnic for women, Lajpat Nagar-1, New Delhi offers 1,2,3 year diploma programs in interior design.
(4.) Sir J J College of Art, Mumbai offer BFA Interior Decoration ( 15 seats ) and BFA Applied Art through MG AACET entrance.
(5.) Garware Institute of Career Education and Development, Mumbai University Offers 3 years Full Time Diploma in Interior Design. There are 60 seats and admission is on the basis of entrance test followed by Interview.
(6.) SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai ( With campuses in Churchgate, Juhu and Pune) offer BA in Visual Art.
(7.) Mount Carmel College, Banaglore ( NAAC A grade ) offers B Sc program in interior design and Management, Students from all streams are eligible and students with NATA score are preferred. Admission is on the basis of entrance test in may every year.
(8.) Arvindbhai Patel Institute of Environmental Design : Dr H M Patel School of Interior Design, Vallabh Vidya Nagar Offers Bachelor in Interior Design ( 4 years ). Students from any stream are eligible. Duration of the programme is 4 year (08 Semester) full time on Campus and there are 80 Seats.

Pay and Remuneration


A fresher who has just passed out diploma or degree in interior designing can get a pay of Rs 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh per year. Once you gain experience and acquire the status of project manager, you can easily expect a sum between Rs 3.5 lakhs to 6 lakhs a year. The amount goes up with your reputation and skills and sometimes depending on the project.

The profession of interior designing has come up to the limelight due to the contribution made by famous interior designers. They are making a wonderful concept of space utilization. Some of them are as follows:
Frances Adler Elkins: She is famous for her play of colors and a level of contemporary furnishings. She has been a legend for art decor. Some of her works are the Treasure Island (San Francisco Bay), The Zellerback Masion in Broadway, etc.
Elsie De Wolfe: She is famous for her metallic finishes and to set light to Victorian style. Even in trendsetting parties, she has contributed her talent. Her famous works are potted palms, lounges, etc.

A Day In Life


An interior designer has a busy schedule. Their days begin early with taking a quick review of tasks at hand. Looking at the latest trends in interiors. The day progresses with emails and chats with clients. Sometimes face to face meetings with the clients also need to be done. Coordination with vendors of fixtures or painters or accessories and support staff is integral to the work.
